CHAPTER TWELVE

“Lord Hamilton Flankermenshire,” Alan said, holding up a small old black book with one hand. He massaged one of my feet with the other. My head rested against Dimitri’s chest. The three of us were snuggled on the couch in the living room. The rest of our friends sat around the room. Jenny and Aisling shared another couch. Wei guarded the door for no particular reason while Sirius and Peter stood by the fireplace. The hearth blazed with enough light to push back the darkness. Azalea sat on Peter’s shoulder, tucked against his neck and ready to listen to Alan read from the book he’d found in the library, a book that was hopefully about portals.

The full moon was visible through the window, and I couldn’t help but think about my werewolf friends. Except for William, the others were roaming the grounds and soaking in the moonlight and the extra energy we creatures of the night got from it.

Power stirred around me. A felt like a fuse had been lit in my blood. In the past, it had never felt this powerful, but with every passing month of pregnancy, it grew. It was no wonder Sirius had chosen this night to drag me out of my sweet stupor. The call to get my necromancy on was powerful.

I was trying not to moan at the satisfaction of Alan’s hand. It was almost impossible. “You were right. That name is odd.”

“And not real,” Alan said. “I looked him up. From what I could gather, he never existed.”

From the corner of my eye, I caught Lilac’s gaze. She was staring at me with this great empty look. What Sirius wanted me to do didn’t sit right with me. If I were reading Lilac correctly, I’d already taken the love of her life. I didn’t want to take her sister as well.

I turned back to Alan, “Okay. Read the poem about portals.”

He cleared his throat and tickled under my foot. The sensation pushed laughter up my body and past my lips.

He smiled and stopped. “I didn’t say I was sure. I’m just assuming based on what we’ve heard and know.”

“Well, that’s better than nothing. Whatcha got?”

He got right down to business after that.
